  • Jan. 7th, 2010 at 1:14 AM
macaroni grill in the oaks mall is hiring...like big...every position...

servers, dish, prep, cooks, hosts, whatever...

if you have restaurant experience, and you need a job, stop in between 2-4pm mon - thurs and fill out an application...

just to give you an idea, they're looking for like 15-20 servers alone...so, um, yeah...come...
This may be the wrong group to ask this to, and it may also be insane but I am wondering what your opinions are.

I would like to complete my masters thesis for April defence. I have yet to finish conducting my research, but I have a skeleton of my thesis complete and some chapters almost finished and will be absolutely done my research by mid February (I am conducting interviews and some of my interviewees are not available until then).

My word count is to be 19,000 and I my final copy is due the 20th of March.

I am not doing anything else this semester, no work, only thesis.

Do you academic peeps think this is possible?

That light at the end of the tunnel

  • Jan. 6th, 2010 at 11:44 PM
So today I went through a graduation audit to try and meet the summer graduation application deadline. Lo and behold, I found out that I was able to submit a late application for spring graduation! So come May I will have my MS in hand.

Hoorah, and congrats to all of my fellow graduating grad students here as well! We can see the light, and the chance of finally earning an income we can live off of! =P

Progress report question

  • Jan. 6th, 2010 at 3:41 PM
I'm working on a progress report so that can hopefully get another year of funding from my current funding source. In a small section of my report I'm mentioning the meetings I attended this year. At one meeting, my advisor and his colleague gave a team talk. I made a few graphs that wound up in their slides. Because of that, I'm listed as the fourth/last author on their abstract.

What should I say in my progress report to reflect that contribution?

Virginia Real Estate Law

  • Jan. 6th, 2010 at 7:33 PM
I was wondering if anybody knew of any sites that have Virginia's real estate laws listed. I did a search, but none of the official looking *.va.us and *.gov sites are loading. I shouldn't need an actual lawyer, but I am writing a letter to my leasing office and would like to be able to quote a few things from a reliable source. I've found several "tenant rights" websites, but I'd rather it come straight from the source. I know I can go to the library and pour through books if I need to, but I figured an official website might be updated more regularly.

Pekin duckies arrived!

  • Jan. 6th, 2010 at 5:02 PM
I posted here in November asking about raising Pekin ducks because I was considering giving some to my boyfriend for his birthday. Since it's a bad idea to spring living creatures on people, even though they've expressed interest in owning them, I ended up foregoing the element of surprise and talking to him about it directly so we could prepare/I could make sure he really really wanted them as a Christmas present instead.

This morning at 6:45 I got a call from the post office that they had arrived and to come pick up the little quackers. All 6 (1 male, 5 females) made it safely and are absolutely darling. For the time being they're living in a straw lined box with a heat lamp but once they're bigger and it is warmer outside, they've got a big new coop and a kiddie pool to splash around in.

He's a very proud momma duck and we're both really looking forward to watching them grow. Thanks so much to everyone for their insight on having ducks as pets!

 Hello!

So, I'm editing my undergraduate thesis, and I can see that my discussion of two books is confusing, because the main characters of each have the same name. Since the titles of the book have the character-names within (Ella Enchanted and Just Ella) would it make sense to refer to the characters by the titles-as-nickname?

For instance: While Ella Enchanted shows agency in spite of being cursed, Just Ella is hindered by the magicless world she lives in*

Burned out lightbulb

  • Jan. 6th, 2010 at 2:44 PM
I have two desk lamps that have grow bulbs in them for my plants in the winter time. I have both lamps plugged into an extension cord, and then the extension cord plugged into a power strip. About a month ago, one of the bulbs burned out, so I replaced it. This morning, the new bulb burned out. Not the original, but the one I just replaced. So I have one lamp, that has had its same bulb for several months, and one that has burned our twice in a few weeks time. Any ideas??

One can say the same to various points for those of us pursuing advanced business and science degrees; do not simply expect to teach. The laws of supply and demand cannot be ignored.

Totally hypothetical...ish.

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 11:07 PM
Let's say Grad Student A did an experiment with a particular hypothesis. In so doing, A collected a lot of peripherally related information.

Upon data analysis, Grad Student A's hypothesis did not turn out so well. Grad Student B says, "Hey, you have this data for another idea I had... mind running some quick stats to see if that bears out?"

Suppose B's hypothesis DID in fact work out. A shows the data to their adviser who immediately comes in his pants because the data are so interesting and remarkable (despite the fact this is not what A set out to study).

Does B deserve any authorship on the paper, even though all B really contributed was, "Hey, what about..."?

Fast yet awesome soup!

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 10:48 PM
This was a super-fast yet very yummy soup I threw together last week when my bf and I were sick thanks to large family gatherings full of sniffly people. It uses a few pre-made ingredients, but you could definitely replace the boxed stock with home made (and replace the water with more stock)

Ingredients (everything is approximate)
2 tbs olive oil
1 1/2 c carrots, cut into 5mm rings (about 1 1/2 large carrots)
2 sticks celery, chopped
1 small onion, diced
4 cloves of garlic, minced (or to taste)
1 box Campbell's vegetarian soup stock
about 3 c water
1 c frozen corn
fresh ground pepper, to taste
wide egg noodles, cooked

To Make:
Heat olive oil in stockpot, and saute onion and garlic until onions just start to get transparent. Add carrots and celery, and saute until nearly cooked. Add pepper if desired (don't add salt- the broth has more than enough!) If the veggies are starting to stick, and a little water to deglaze the pot. Add the entire box of broth, and more water to taste (I added about 3 cups, since the fresh veggies add a lot of flavour). Let simmer for 15 minutes, then add frozen corn. Cook on low heat for another ten to fifteen minutes, until everything is at correct temperature and has had a chance to blend a bit.
Serve in a bowl with wide egg noodles (or preferred vegan noodle).

Serves about four people, or two sick and crabby people who just want to lie on the couch and eat soup.

Hope everyone has a happy and healthy 2010!

Advisor problems

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 7:41 PM
Hey all. Having some major unhappy issues in grad school. Aside from being utterly sick of the experience, all my paths to getting out of it have been blocked. I'm 'so close' to being done, though, that it doesn't make much sense to quit now. All classes are done, just need to defend and finish writing.

But...

I was set to graduate sometime this semester, and this was acknowledged by my advisor. I've been here for 2.5 years, long since finished with my requirements, so I'm registering for just three credits hours this semester.

Early December, however, my advisor revealed to me that he'd be out of town starting from mid-December to mid-February. As unwelcomed as this news was, I was told he'd be in contact and help me through writing my thesis and finishing up some of the data processing.

I emailed him on 14 December asking for help, and was told that he'd help after a major international meeting. I got no response, so yesterday I emailed him again. He said he wouldn't have time to help me at all until he got back in mid-February.

I'm totally panicked now. I was planning on getting out in March (I have a life, an apartment, all ready to get on to), but that isn't even possible now, I don't think?

My other committee member lives in Mexico and has poor communication. My third committee member will be getting back from Antarctica 20 Jan.

This SUCKS. Any advice?

Tempeh?

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 4:15 PM
Anyone have any suggestions for how to use it? I have a package sitting in the refrigerator, and other than stir-frying it with some spices I'm at a loss. What are your favorite tempeh recipes? Thanks!

Cranberry-Lime Salsa

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 3:25 PM
Ingredients:

12 oz. cranberries
Scant 1/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup fresh lime juice
2 large garlic cloves, minced
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
3 scallions, chopped
Small bunch of cilantro, chopped

Instructions:

-Bring cranberries to a boil in hot water, boil ~2 minutes, DRAIN WELL
- In large bowl, mix sugar and lime juice
-When cranberries are thoroughly drained, add them to the bowl
-Add other ingredients, mix well, cover and allow to macerate at least 20 minutes before chilling in refridgerator.

I like this receipe in particular because it involves no added salt. It's pretty scrumptious.

Auto Insurance

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 2:04 PM
Hey everyone,

I want cheaper auto insurance. What provider do you use/how much do you pay?

Any stories about accidents? How did your provider hold up their end of the bargain?

My husband and I both are under 25 (he is 19 I am 21) and have squeaky clean driving records.
We have a brand new Ford Escape 2009. We need full coverage. Also looking for minimum coverage for just myself on our older car, a 2002 Ford Taurus.

I do realize since he is so young his insurance will skyrocket! But; I still want to shop around to find the best deal.

Right now we are with Allstate and pay $130/month.

Thanks so much in advance.

EDITED: The $130 a month is only for our new car. We don't have our other car insured.

I posted here about a messy living situation, I spoke with the landlord and she said we have 2 ways out of the lease...
1) "Buy out" the remainder of the lease which means I move out in Feb and pay everything we would owe until August...ha! I WISH I had enough money to even consider doing that!

2) Call a real estate agent to have them show the place and try to get it rented. Even if we know people who want to take over the lease, they have to go through the real estate agent and pay her. I don't know yet if we pay the real estate agent as well. This seems, not quite legal, is it?
